REMEMBERING ~ Laura Jennifer Miller

As this time of October approaches each year, I'm flooded with so many memories of my sweet sister Laura. Today it has been 24 years since she went HOME to be with OUR Lord! I know it is normal to remember so vividly many details surrounding that time ~ some such sweet tender memories ~ others filled with so much sadness I can't and don't usually let my mind or heart make the trek toward them. Time is such a great and natural balm of healing. I am so glad! Some years are filled with greater remembrance and emotion.  I have found this year ~ 24 years later ~ to be one of those years! I don't know what to attribute it to...maybe because I've reconnected through facebook with so many friends from all those years ago that Laura and  I went to high school with...maybe it's because this summer I was reunited with my aunt and cousins whom I haven't seen since my sisters funeral...maybe it is just returning from the most wonderful visit with friends in Florida that knew and loved my sister so deeply......maybe...maybe...don't know why and it really doesn't matter why.
I just am!!!

Each and everyday, at some point and time,  I think of dear Laura Jennifer Miller ~ sometimes it's a fleeting thought, sometimes it's a time that lingers filled with treasured memories of our growing up years and other times wondering what my life would have been with her here on earth with me the past 24 years! The sister part of my heart is a very tender part and many times a part I guard carefully.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is found in the book of Ecclesiastes and it's a gentle reminder to me that to everything there is a time and a season...I do find great comfort in that. Especially on days like today when I'm just human and  I don't understand.

A wonderful memory I do have of God's perfect timing...
The Friday before Laura's accident (October 14th) she drove herself & the same 4 girls that were in the accident from Salem, Oregon to Tacoma, Washington to see all of their families. She dropped off Karena, Jamie, Susan and Wendy at their homes and then she came to my home in DuPont. My parents lived in Idaho at the time. Laura usually always wanted to be on the go...go...go...however this particular weekend she said she just wanted to stay home and enjoy being together. She wanted her best friend, Shannon to come spend the weekend too. We had the most precious time...she spent many hours holding our first born son Tyler who was just 3 months old. I cooked her favorite meals. We did go a concert that Saturday night at Life Center in Tacoma. That was only thing I could get her to leave the house for. I told her Jim bought us tickets so we kinda needed to use them! :) We both talked on the phone to my mom and dad for over 2 hours that Saturday. My mom, of course, wishes she could have seen Laura that weekend however she's always been so gracious to me and told me she was glad Laura was with me. She went that Sunday afternoon (October 16th) and picked up the 4 girls and they headed back to college. They were all freshman in their 3rd week of college. The next evening (October 17th)  those same 5 girls piled in my sisters car to go for pizza. The accident happened just a couple miles from the college. Karena and  Jamie were killed instantly. Laura lived until the next morning on October 18th. Wendy and  Susan suffered very serious injuries that required months & months of recovery.  It was just that ~ a car accident. It has forever changed my life and the lives of countless others.

I won't promise that I understand why these things happen.
 I don't.
I will promise that time is a great healer.
It is.
I won't promise that somedays the tears still won't stop flowing.
They don't.
I will promise that MY GOD'S GRACE IS ALWAYS SUFFICIENT.
It is. For me.

MY vacation/THEIR vacation ~ PART 3

DAY # 5 - Saturday 7/14/12

Bowl and Pitcher State Park
My Aunt Mary is EXTREMELY afraid of heights so you can imagine being at the top of Mt. Spokane one day and the top of Bowl & Pitcher the next was quite a feat for her! She was so brave and actually enjoyed it!!!

Bowl and Pitcher State Park is absolutely one of the most breathtaking places in Spokane and I'm ashamed to say this was my first time to visit there! Needless to say ~ it was the first of many times!!!

Everyone came to my home for dinner on Saturday night...

Bet you can't guess what we had for dindin...
YEP! You guessed it...Jim's FETTUCCINE

IT WAS {as usual} DELICIOUS!!!

I guess it doesn't matter how old I am...when my mom ask me to play the piano for company...

and Jim even sang for everyone...

We all had the BEST time being together and I can't wait until our next trip we have together!!!

I am so very thankful that they chose to spent their vacation here in Washington with me & my family! I have so many wonderful & fond memories of all the years growing up that we spent in Iowa on vacation. It was so fun to reminisce over the past and although it brought tears to our eyes several times those are memories I wouldn't trade for anything. One aspect I truly loved about having family here was the time we spent remembering our most PRECIOUS and TREASURED GRANDMA MILLER!!! We shared the most amazing GRANDMA and there was something so special about being around loved ones who understood and shared the same memories!!! It made me miss my sweet sister Laura yet it reminded me the bond & love that is shared with
FAMILY!!!

A BOND THAT IS LIKE NO OTHER!!!

MY vacation because of THEIR vacation...PART 1

One of my favorite things about having company from out of town is I get to be a tourist in my town and have a mini vacation!!!

It really is TOO MUCH FUN!!!

I had not seen these folks for 25 plus years {won't let that happen again} and we enjoyed reconnecting after all this time!!!

My Aunt MaryAnn {in between Jim & Lauren} is my dad's sister and 5 of her daughters {MY COUSINS} came to visit. My aunt and uncle have 9 children, 7 of which are girls and the girls go on a SISTERS TRIP every year so I felt so very blessed that chose Washington as their destination this year. 5 flew in from Iowa and 1 from California.

I grew up seeing them usually every summer and then after some tough life circumstances had lost touch with them. I regret that however realize it's just part of life and I am thankful that we're "back together" again!!! We're already planning our vacation together next summer!!!

Here is a RE-CAP of our wonderful week together...

I was so shocked because...
my cousin Shelly SURPRISED me!!! She originally was unable to come on the trip due to conflicting events but then found out a couple weeks ago she would be able to come out. Growing up I had always been closest to Shelly as we are the same age and her younger sister Trisha is the same age as my sister. They are the youngest 2 of the 9 children so it was only natural that Laura and I spent the most time with them. When I found out Shelly couldn't come I was so disappointed. So imagine my shock when Mom and I picked up Sheryl at the airport and I was asked my a "stranger" if we could give her a ride because she didn't have any money for a cab. I stared at her knowing we could give her a ride however there was this feeling that this woman was familiar but I couldn't place why I felt that way. Finally, after a few moments Sheryl said..."Michele...it's SHELLY"...I literally SQUEALED with delight and was so happy she was able to come on the trip!!! We certainly had alot of catching up to do!!! It had been 28 years!!! Way too long!!!
My cousin Sheryl is from California and I have been able to see her a few times over the last several years and I'm so thankful for that!!!

The rest of the gang arrived at 11:15 p.m. {Monday 7/9} and they didn't know Shelly was coming either...so they were SURPRISED too when I brought them back to moms!

DAY #1 - Tuesday 7/10/12
Had a big breakfast and then everyone got ready and we went downtown to Riverfront Park and to ROOST as they wanted to see 3 Craft Chicks spaces.

a VIP'S kind of Easter...

Easter ~ 1976

Every Saturday at 9 am SHARP our Poppy came and picked up my sister and me for breakfast. We would go to VIP'S in Nisqually, WA not very far from our hometown of DuPont. This particular year we colored Easter pictures the week before and imagine my delight when my mom said VIP'S called and said I won the contest!!! The GRAND prize was this GIANT purple Easter bunny!!! I do remember how I loved that silly thing!!!

When I look at this picture it makes me smile...love our sweet little outfits, love the 1970's vehicles in the background and I especially love that I can remember how fun that particular Saturday morning with Poppy was!!!

Saturday Mornings + VIP'S + POPPY =  cherished memories!!!

For me you'll always be 18...

and BEAUTIFUL!

Today ~ March 22nd would have been my sisters birthday!!! Laura was 18 when she was killed in a car accident and that was almost 24 years ago. She would have been 42 today!!! I can't really wrap my brain around that fact. Whatever age someone is when they leave this earth is forever how you remember them. At least I do. It's hard to imagine what would have been...Would she have married?...Would I have had the privilege of being an aunt?...We would have gone through life's trials & triumphs TOGETHER ~ as SISTERS. The longing and ache for what might have been I don't think ever goes away. The longing and ache for what you knew to be I KNOW never goes away. I think of Laura Jennifer Miller everyday and I'm so blessed beyond measure that she was my sister.

the UNCONDITIONAL LOVE of a SISTER

I remember the UNCONDITIONAL LOVE of my sister and I love watching the UNCONDITIONAL LOVE between my girls in action! Lauren is almost 20 and Natalie is almost 17 and the bond these two have is like no other. You don't want to mess with one or the other as they are fiercely protective of each other. I love seeing this and is comforting to me to know the love they share for one another. They don't always see eye to eye yet they love each other and most importantly accept each other for who they are. My sweet sister passed away 23 years ago and I miss her everyday. I'm so thankful for the bond and relationship we had while she was here on this earth. I don't know why I was thinking of that especially this last week ~ just was I guess as I watched Lauren and Natalie together! I'm glad they have each other!!!

It was so sweet to me yesterday to read Lauren's facebook status...she said she was going to spend the evening with her best friend who happened to be her sister...they went to a Spokane Chiefs hockey game and had a blast!!!

My girls are phenomenal people and I am so proud to be their MAMA!!!

MEMORIES that fill the CHRISTMAS season...

The ornaments on this small tree are some of my most cherished and favorite. About 34 years ago my sweet sister and I painted these. Laura was 7 and I was 10 at the time. Our dear friends Gary and Ginny Evans made these ceramic ornaments and then had Laura and I come and spend the night and paint these for gifts for our parents. After my sister passed away in 1988, my mom asked me if I wanted to have these most special ornaments! Of course I did! Some you can definitely tell our young ages by the paint job and although to most people they aren't that wonderful and pretty, to me they are the most beautiful ornaments and among my most treasured Christmas decorations!

I love everything about Christmas...the traditions, glitter and lights, magical memories, family and friends and most of all remembering the TRUE reason for this wonderful Christmas season...
the BIRTHDAY OF A KING!

I sure wish all of you {my family and friends} a very
MERRY CHRISTMAS
and
BLESSED NEW YEAR!
